DIY power!

Once upon a time I had this sweet gig testing out Pinterest links and sharing the results on TV and online.

Here I am testing a few snack recipes

cleaning up my house with vinegar

getting my whites whiter and my brights brighter

getting more from my makeup

…and trying not to get eaten alive by bugs.

(I also tested out some DIY dishwasher detergents, tried simple alternatives for household products, and cooked everything but the kitchen sink in a muffin tin.)

Despite it being a fun gig, I learned a lot from this experience. I learned some really cool tricks and was introduced to some great blogs with fun ideas. But most of all, I learned that the DIY life is easier than I thought. Making things from scratch that you could easily buy at the store seemed like something only people with full-time nannies could do. Sure, I could put dinner on the table every night, but make my own laundry detergent, bug spray, orange floor cleaner? Ain’t nobody got time for that.

But it turns out, it’s really not that time consuming at all. Plus, it helps you reduce your household costs AND eliminate chemicals in your home at the same time — what some might consider THE reason to do these things in the first place. Suddenly it’s not such a sacrifice to find 10 extra minutes to grate some laundry soap every few months.

So give it a whirl. Try making something this week, something you’ve always thought about trying but never had the time or confidence to do. You may catch the spark, like I did, and be on your way to a healthier home with more money in your pocket.
